Start the New Year with New Habits

The new year is here and it is likely that you’re joining millions of others in planning a new you. You’re looking forward to dumping old habits and replacing with a new way of living. Making a plan to do this is a great start to succeeding, though too often people believe that merely saying ‘I’m going to do this or that’ (such as, for example, give up smoking) is a plan in itself. It isn’t. And this is where a life coaching business begins to have such a positive effect.

‘If, then’: the foundation of your life changing plan

If you really want to see the new you in the New Year, then the first step is to draw out a plan of how to achieve your goals. Create a timetable of aims and how you’re going to hit those targets. Along the way, give yourself a few milestones so you can measure your progress. However, even with such a plan in place, the odds of success may be improved but there is still no guarantee of becoming the new you. This is where a buddy comes in.

Partner up to plan and perform

Research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, conducted by Professor Mark Connor, Dr Andrew Prestwich, and Dr Rebecca Lawton from the University of Leeds, and published in 2012, agrees that specific planning toward life changing goals is a necessary part of achieving your aims. But the research also finds that just as important is getting others involved in your plans. Whether it is a family member, a friend, or a colleague, having someone walk the journey with you massively increases your chances of making those New Year resolutions stick.

In the research the team carried out, it was found that the effect of planning and working with a third party toward life goals was still noticeable after six months. And, after that period of time, old habits are replaced with new.

When you experience this approach in action, you’ll find you want to help others hit their life targets: you’ll want to become a life coach.
